This is a Pre-Qingming picking of Maofeng green tea grown on the Yellow Mountain, a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is an area of China National Conservation, and the tea there grows in an excellent, pollution free environment.
Maofeng is known for it's smoky undertone while keeping a soft and floral character. While Maofeng is typically a fairly rich green tea, pre-Qingming picking offers a lot more complexity than harvests from later in the year. It is sweet and malty and has a soft mouthfeel. For best results this tea should be made in a small teapot or a gaiwan using a multiple infusion technique - large leaf to water ratio and short infusions to start with.
Qingming is a Chinese festival celebrated on the 15th day from the Spring Equinox, it falls within the first week of April. Tea picked before this festival is praised for it's delicate and sweet character as it's made of the first leaf buds produced after winter's rest. There is only a small amount of leaves and buds to pick this early in the year so teas harvested pre-Qingming are only available in small batches. Early picking leaves are more tender and contain higher levels of amino acids. This is a limited edition connoisseurs choice for green tea.
Origin: Huangshan, Anhui, China
Flavour: Slightly savoury, and a little bit smoky, yet floral and sweet at the same time. This tea is smoother than those picked later in the year and offer more complexity.
